August means another summer is winding down and the kids will return to school soon. With that in mind, we lined up some early August events for the family to enjoy together. Get out there and have some family fun in Wilmington this month!

Giant Legos

Cost: Free

How could the words “Giant Legos” not make you want to go? The Main Library in downtown Wilmington, NC, features a chance for kids to build a colossal structure of their own.

Family Night at the Boardwalk

August 1, 2017, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Carolina Beach Boardwalk, Cape Fear Blvd, Carolina Beach

Cost: Free

August 1st is National Night Out! Family Night at the Boardwalk in Carolina Beach, NC, features a bounce house, activities for kids, raffles, and live entertainment by Lynne & DJ Dave.

Summer Aquarium Program

August 2, 2017, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Historic Assembly Building, 720 Channel Blvd, Topsail Island

Cost: Free

The Summer Aquarium Program at the Historic Assembly Building in Topsail Beach is presented by the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Outreach and features interactive programs designed for families with school aged children. This week’s program is Case Study: Sharks. Enjoy this educational program for your family fun in Wilmington. 


Family Movie Matinee

August 3, 2017, 3:00 PM

Main Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington

Cost: Free

The Main Library in downtown Wilmington, NC, presents a Family Movie Matinee. The library’s contract won’t let them tell you the movie’s title, but you can find it on the New Hanover County Public Library’s public calendar. (It’s a new classic that you and the kids will love!)

Up & Active

August 3, 2017, 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Ocean Front Park, 105 Atlantic Avenue, Kure Beach

Cost: Free

Get the kids on their feet and moving at the Up & Active event. It will be happening on the Ocean Front Park lawn in Kure Beach, NC. Local band Lynne and the Wave will be leading an hour of music and games for all ages. Face painting provided by Events by P3.

Bike MS Fundraiser

August 13, 2017, 3:00 PM

Ironclad Brewery, 115 North 2nd Street, Wilmington

The Ironclad Brewery in downtown Wilmington will host the Bike MS Fundraiser. There will be live music with the acoustic duo Brent Stimmel and Mike Ruwe, as well as pizza, raffles, and a silent auction that includes a free one-night stay at a hotel in Wilmington, an elite pair of tennis shoes, and a basketball signed by Kentucky head coach John Calipari. All proceeds benefit North Carolina Multiple Sclerosis and Caroline’s Chainbreakers, a charity bike team that rides for a cure for MS.


Kapena Kai & Nicoblue Skate Classic

Aussie Island Surf Shop, 5101 Dunlea Court, Wilmington

Cost: Free

If you like the on-land version of a board beneath your feet, look no further than the inaugural Kapena Kai & Nicoblue Skate Classic at Aussie Island Surf Shop. It features a skating competition, vendors and live music by UNITY.


Standup Comedy with Brian Regan

Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, 1941 Amphitheater Drive, Wilmington

Cost: $42.50 to $52.50

In case you didn’t already know, the big yellow one is the sun. The great Brian Regan will be at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, NC. Endorsed by other comedic greats such as Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, you won’t want to miss this. Doors open at 6:30pm.
