How to Make Your Home a Smart Home

smart home wilmington

Ever since the first world’s fair in 1851, convenience has been the name of the game. Convenience is the reason all our stuff is becoming so smart. Remember when cell phones could do nothing more than make a phone call? Today, smart home conveniences make protecting our homes easier.

Why Consider a Smart Home?

Controlling your home from your bed is as convenient as it gets, but nothing tops the peace of mind you get from securing your home while you’re away. How many times have you run out of the house and forgotten to turn off a light, lock the door, reset the thermostat, or turn off the coffee pot? Smart homes make security, energy savings, efficiency, and protection easier to manage. A home that has smart features can help you rest at ease since you’ve programmed it to take care of itself.

Smart homes can also help you take care of your loved ones. Doctors and family members can check up on elderly relatives without needing live-in assistance. Older children who need hands-off monitoring, toddlers who need supervision, and babies who need to be kept comfortable help show why parents are becoming more interested in smart homes.

As a certified smart home consultant, Home Décor Solutions understands how practical these features are. Here are some ways we can help.

Home Comforts: A Better Way

Light switches. Dimmers, occupancy sensors and whole home light control systems can manage electricity bills and make your home more secure. If you dim the lights just 10%, your bulbs can last up to an extra three years; dim them 50% and you could save up to 40% on your bills.

Door locks. Key fobs let your smart lock know that you’re just outside the door – and all you need to do is touch the lock to open it.  Others are Bluetooth compatible, can unlock on voice command or require a key code to get in.

Home security. More and more homes have both internal and external cameras installed. These are useful for keeping an eye on the kids while you may be out. They also provide extra security around your home.

Flood sensors. If the storm comes overnight, you may not realize you need the sump pump until it’s too late. Smart sensors can detect flooding and immediate turn on the pumps to keep your basement dry.

Thermostats. These are some of the more recently-advertised ways of improving your home. Thermostats feature voice-activated temperature controls and presets. These can also communicate with your calendar to know if you’ll be home and should adjust the temperature higher or lower – saving you money on energy costs.

Ceiling fans. Certain ceiling fans turn on as soon as you walk in the room but also have built-in thermostats to detect whether turning itself on is necessary.

Outlets. You can connect motorized window coverings, lamps, and other electronics and appliances to these smart outlets and program them to turn on or off based on the time of day, the temperature, and other factors.

Window Shades. Cordless motorized window shades make managing your energy bills much easier. They can be controlled by timers, solar sensors, thermostats, and from the touch of your smartphone screen.

Appliances. Coffee makers, water heaters, clocks, kitchen appliances, and much more can all be interwoven through a smart home system that you can set to your liking.
